We recommend you surround yourself with French as much as possible in a US environment by listening to French songs or web-based French radio stations as well as watching French television or movies.
Please
consult our list of French radio stations, televisions and movies.
Even if you do not fully understand what you are watching, it is recommended that you practice watching movies without any subtitles because you are then making a conscious effort of comprehension. The underlying subconscious processes gradually facilitate the understanding along with repetitions and practice.
When we watch a movie with subtitles however, we have a tendency to read them. The fact that our attention is being distracted from what is being said in the foreign language prevents us from making similar efforts and developing the same subconscious processes.
We strongly promote watching movies as they represent entertaining and efficient ways to expand on a language, without people realizing it or struggling.
In addition we recommend you read as much as possible in French. Reading on a regular basis will not only considerably expand your vocabulary but also set permanently French language structures in your brain.
You will realize that reading in French is much easier than you thought. A lot of French words are spelled the same way as in English but sound different. This is the reason why a word might seem very difficult to identify when you hear it but not when you actually read it.
